Don’t Steal from God!

A few divergent topics in today’s daf. 1. Finally arriving at actual BERAKHOT (blessings) — birkat hanehenin, those blessings of thanksgiving that we make over food that prevent us from stealing from God or desecrating that which is holy. And 2. On that topic of what is holy (in a very different context), Yardaena takes on the question of time management and life balance — should we only ever be immersed in Torah, or are we supposed to be juggling (as we always are)? It’s Abaye’s observation that wins the day (listen for it).

Also: WE NOW HAVE MUSIC! With much appreciation to David Glazer for his rendition of our theme (we’re still fine-tuning (yes), but are pleased to share it now anyway).

Anne and Yardaena

Anne Gordon is the deputy editor of Ops & Blogs at The Times of Israel. She is a veteran educator, having taught in high school and post-high school institutions in Israel and America for several decades. Yardaena Osband is a pediatrician and teaches in her community and online. They both hail from Boston, proud alumna of Maimonides School, where they first learned Gemara. Talking Talmud is their conversation (via podcast) on the daf yomi. They say: "Learning the daf? We have something for you to think about. Not learning the daf? We have something for you to think about! (Along with a taste of the daf...) Join the conversation with us!"
