Ketubot 37: An Ethic of Justice

A female convert needs to wait 3 months post-conversion before getting married, to be sure she wasn’t pregnant prior to marriage. But not everyone agrees. Perhaps she doesn’t need to wait at all. The concern being whether she would have protected herself from promiscuity before conversion. Even to what extent would she work to prevent conception, in the event of promiscuous behavior? The women in this case certainly have some measure of agency. Also, the “eglah erufah”! Even the murderer needs to be treated with respect.
