This week we will learn how they sanctified each month during the Temple period. Witnesses came to testify in Jerusalem, and were even permitted to travel on Shabbat. The witnesses were questioned about where they saw the new moon in the sky and what it looked like exactly. When the court was satisfied, they declared the new month. Originally, fires were lit in order to let the Jewish people throughout Israel and abroad that the new month was declared. Later, messengers were sent instead. We will learn why there was a change in the notification process.
