Ketubot 36: The Spectrum of Violation

08.11.2022 | י״ד באב תשפ״ב

A series of cases where divorce or annulment is taking place – when does the wife receive the penalties, for example, if she’s been a victim of rape or seduction – especially if she’s only betrothed, and presumed to be a virgin. What about a minor? What about an aylonit? What if she’s simply older and her hyman is no longer “intact” (without sexual encounter)? What about a blind woman? Also, a new mishnah, specifically on the women who would not have a fine be laid to their fathers in the event of their being raped. What about molestation that isn’t full rape? It’s still a violation, but is it always going to have the worst-case-scenario consequences?

Anne and Yardaena

Anne Gordon is the deputy editor of Ops & Blogs at The Times of Israel. She is a veteran educator, having taught in high school and post-high school institutions in Israel and America for several decades. Yardaena Osband is a pediatrician and teaches in her community and online. They both hail from Boston, proud alumna of Maimonides School, where they first learned Gemara. Talking Talmud is their conversation (via podcast) on the daf yomi. They say: “Learning the daf? We have something for you to think about. Not learning the daf? We have something for you to think about! (Along with a taste of the daf…) Join the conversation with us!”
