Talking Talmud

Medicine Is Not Food!

02.08.2020 | י״ג בשבט תש״פ

I’ll note that I think the most important part of our discussion for today’s daf (recorded in advance, of course) takes place at the end of the episode – namely, the greater awareness of just everything in daily life that the whole masekhet pushes us toward — today, with regard to agriculture and all the various segments of the plants we eat, and over the past month plus, with regard to time, setting, and more. I believe in this conscious and constant awareness of all we do. I accept Rabbi Twersky zt”l’s comment that leaving with that constant awareness is the essence of kedushah (I fear that my ability to quote him more directly than this paraphrase is gone) — and I think that one of the clear applications of that is our awareness of time, whether it pertains to the time for saying Shema, davening the Amidah, or relating to Saturday as Shabbat.

There’s more here before that though – the fact that medicine does not get a “birkat hanehenin” blessing, and the mitzvah of Orlah, and how it applies in the Diaspora, even though it’s ostensibly an Eretz-Yisrael-dependent mitzvah.

Anne and Yardaena

Anne Gordon is the deputy editor of Ops & Blogs at The Times of Israel. She is a veteran educator, having taught in high school and post-high school institutions in Israel and America for several decades. Yardaena Osband is a pediatrician and teaches in her community and online. They both hail from Boston, proud alumna of Maimonides School, where they first learned Gemara. Talking Talmud is their conversation (via podcast) on the daf yomi. They say: “Learning the daf? We have something for you to think about. Not learning the daf? We have something for you to think about! (Along with a taste of the daf…) Join the conversation with us!”
