Talking Talmud

Rabbi Akiva’s Moment of Death and Shema

03.04.2020 | ח׳ באדר תש״פ

It’s the final stretch of Berakhot — now’s the time to catch up if you are behind and still want to!

In which the topics that we didn’t address in this daf, as well as those that we did, all merit massive discussion. From the roles of men and women – and whether the Talmud relates to what it presents as prescriptive or descriptive (innate, required, or simply a matter of what happens) to the far-reaching implications of one’s “yetzer hara” on one’s behavior to the vast challenges of martyrdom, there is much more to say here (and those are just the topics we touched on).

Anne and Yardaena

Anne Gordon is the deputy editor of Ops & Blogs at The Times of Israel. She is a veteran educator, having taught in high school and post-high school institutions in Israel and America for several decades. Yardaena Osband is a pediatrician and teaches in her community and online. They both hail from Boston, proud alumna of Maimonides School, where they first learned Gemara. Talking Talmud is their conversation (via podcast) on the daf yomi. They say: “Learning the daf? We have something for you to think about. Not learning the daf? We have something for you to think about! (Along with a taste of the daf…) Join the conversation with us!”
