Talking Talmud

Ignoramuses in Our Midst

02.19.2020 | כ״ד בשבט תש״פ

So much to discuss, so little time. Some days more than others.

More on honor. Given the formal protocol, Anne notes the similarities and potential differences from manners in polite society – granted, halakhic dictates have the rabbinic mantle of authority behind them, but the interplay between etiquette and halakhic mores is the open discussion here.

The question of who is an “am ha-aretz” — what makes one so and what that means for the rest of the community — also demands our attention (truly, because when we considered discussing other discussable elements of this daf, we said – no, we have to do this, first). So Yardaena does.

With several notes about the Gemara’s general points of inquiry and its attention to detail – and a brief whiff of the question of reward and punishment in this world.

Anne and Yardaena

Anne Gordon is the deputy editor of Ops & Blogs at The Times of Israel. She is a veteran educator, having taught in high school and post-high school institutions in Israel and America for several decades. Yardaena Osband is a pediatrician and teaches in her community and online. They both hail from Boston, proud alumna of Maimonides School, where they first learned Gemara. Talking Talmud is their conversation (via podcast) on the daf yomi. They say: “Learning the daf? We have something for you to think about. Not learning the daf? We have something for you to think about! (Along with a taste of the daf…) Join the conversation with us!”
