Kiddushin 33: The Ear of Rabbi Yosef’s Donkey

09.14.2023 | כ״ח באלול תשפ״ג

More on giving honor – to Torah scholars. Standing before those who brought first fruits vs. Not standing before Torah scholars – what a difference a mitzvah makes. Plus, when scholars don’t stand up for scholars, and the insult that can provide. Which R. Yehudah HaNasi takes more mildly than the scholars who are hot under the collar. Plus, why standing before another person honors that person. Also, a series of more complicated cases: what happens when the son, who should stand before his father, is his father’s teacher, so the father should stand before the son. What if the person to honor is riding? What about standing for a Sefer Torah? There are different and overlapping kinds of honor – all of which are being established in an objective way, and removing the personal factor.
