Sotah 22: With Great Knowledge Comes Great Responsibility

04.20.2023 | כ״ט בניסן תשפ״ג

The Gemara addresses the categories of those who erode the world – we focus first in the “perushot,” abstemious women. Specifically, a chaste girl who prays all the time, aiming to protect those who might come to sin because of her. Which is fully impressive, except for one who is masking destructive behavior (as in the case of Yochani bat Retivi). Note the real implications of ancient hypocrisy on our modern era as well. Also, the meaning of a child who is not carried to term, and what that case may represent in more abstract problematic terms, not the least of which is being able to pasken halakhah and refrains from doing so.

Anne and Yardaena

Anne Gordon is the deputy editor of Ops & Blogs at The Times of Israel. She is a veteran educator, having taught in high school and post-high school institutions in Israel and America for several decades. Yardaena Osband is a pediatrician and teaches in her community and online. They both hail from Boston, proud alumna of Maimonides School, where they first learned Gemara. Talking Talmud is their conversation (via podcast) on the daf yomi. They say: “Learning the daf? We have something for you to think about. Not learning the daf? We have something for you to think about! (Along with a taste of the daf…) Join the conversation with us!”
