Bekhorot 14: Private Altars

October 02, 2026 | כ״א בתשרי תשפ״ז

A new mishnah! Consecrated animals that acquire a blemish — so they cannot be used for a regular sacrifice, what happens when they’re then used for other things — which doesn’t rid the animal of the first-born status (or the obligation to give the kohen gifts). Note that the order that things happen (when consecrated, when blemished) make a difference in terms of the halakhah for the given animal. Also: Significantly, the Gemara rereads the details of the mishnah completely differently — limiting the cases there for private altars, which changes the circumstances, the consequences, and more.

Anne Gordon is the deputy editor of Ops & Blogs at The Times of Israel. She is a veteran educator, having taught in high school and post-high school institutions in Israel and America for several decades. Yardaena Osband is a pediatrician and teaches in her community and online. They both hail from Boston, proud alumna of Maimonides School, where they first learned Gemara. Talking Talmud is their conversation (via podcast) on the daf yomi. They say: “Learning the daf? We have something for you to think about. Not learning the daf? We have something for you to think about! (Along with a taste of the daf…) Join the conversation with us!”
